README.TXT - How to install the Norton AntiVirus 3.0 Virus
Definitions update
AntiVirus Lab, SYMANTEC/Peter Norton Product Group
September 1, 1994
******************************************************************
Thank you for downloading the virus definition update for Norton
AntiVirus version 3.0. This text file describes the contents of
the .ZIP file and installation procedure.
If your version of Norton AntiVirus 3.0 for Windows and DOS is dated
before 6-23-94, you will need to update it using the NAV August Patch
in order to detect the SMEG (Pathogen and Queeg) and Natas viruses. If
you have not updated your version, download the NAV August Patch from
the Symantec BBS, CompuServe, or America Online. The file is called
NAVUP.ZIP and is located where the monthly update files are normally
found. Alternately, you may call Customer Service at (800)331-7234 to
obtain the NAV August Patch disk.
******************************************************************
All contents of this file have been scanned by Norton AntiVirus
3.0 and are free from virus infection. The virus definition and
repair data included with this update are for use by Norton
AntiVirus 3.0 only. The virus definitions and repair data will
not work with any other software or any earlier version of Norton
AntiVirus. If you experience any trouble with this update, please
contact Norton AntiVirus Technical Support using any of the
methods listed in your user's manual.
******************************************************************
This update contains the following files:
README.TXT This text file contains instructions for
installing the new virus definitions.
SEP94.TXT This text file describes what's new in this update.

replaces the existing virus definitions in your
Norton AntiVirus 3.0 directory.
VIRSCAN.INF This data file is used by Norton AntiVirus 3.0 to
display virus information, such as virus
characteristics and behavior. This file is not
required to detect or repair viruses. To view this
information, use the Virus List command in the
Tools menu.
VIRLIST2.DLL This file supports this and future Virus Definition
updates.

Loading New Definitions
NOTE: The new virus definition files contained in this .ZIP file
replace the corresponding Norton AntiVirus 3.0 files. Only
the most recent virus definitions are required to fully
update your copy of Norton AntiVirus 3.0.
******************************************************************
To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions:
1. Copy VIRSCAN.DAT and VIRSCAN.INF into the Norton
AntiVirus 3.0 directory.
2. Scan a drive, directory, or file with Norton AntiVirus
3.0, in either DOS or Windows.
This will generate new interim files and update the
automatic protection TSR.
3. Reboot your computer to load the updated automatic
protection TSR.
TIP: If you unzipped this file inside your \NAV directory,
(\NDW for users of Norton Desktop for Windows), then
step 1 is already completed. If you unzipped this file
in a different directory, copy the extracted files to
your \NAV directory. If prompted to overwrite existing
files, select Yes.
